is in hawaii. let's go straight to cnn's emily schmidt in washington. good morning. so before he left the capitoal, he laid out this three-point plan to washington. >> before he left to hawaii, he left for a gift for lawmakers to ponder in washington. here are the three main points he's saying. he wants to make sure there's a law passed that ensures 98% of americans know their taxes are not going to go up in just under two weeks. he also wants to make sure that 2 million americans who would otherwise lose their unemployment benefits if we went over the fiscal cliff would be able to keep those benefits. and finally he says, look, we can take a look at the longer term proposals, the larger reform at a later point. just lay the ground work at this point. we also know before the president left, he talked by phone with house speaker john boehner. he met in person with harry reid, although what the private happened, we don't know. but publicly things sound a lot like they have for the past few weeks. take a listen. >> every member of congress believes that, every democrat, every republican.

family arrived in hawaii just a short time ago. the president and lawmakers are expected to return thursday after the christmas break. before leaving washington, mr. obama and house speaker john boehner both expressed hope that a deal will actually get done. >> we can't cut our way to prosperity. we need real economic growth. many of us believe on both sides of the aisle that the fundamental reform of our tax code will help us get our economy moving faster and put more americans back to work. and more americans on -- how we get there, god only knows. >> i asked for a compromise from members of congress, i met them more than halfway on spending and met them halfway on taxes. in terms of actual dollar amounts, we're not that far apart. as of today, i am still ready and willing to get a comprehensive package done. >> but time is running out. to reach an agreement, there are now just ten days left until automatic tax hikes and spending cuts do take effect. the s&p 500 and the nasdaq finished in some negative territory for the day. investors fear the country could slide back into recess

, hawaii, this morning. i'm talking to republican and democratic sources and they really feel like we're going to go over the cliff. what are you hearing? >> i'm hearing it's a very real possibility, and as you're hearing, they aren't even really talking, democrats and reyou public i had cans, the white house talks to senate democrats, but at this point, the white house is not in any real substan tiff conversations with both house republicans and senate republicans as all eyes turn to the senate, and perhaps because of that, some of the pessimism you heard from senator liberman there is shared by replicans. listen. >> when i listen to the president, i think the president is eager to go over the cliff for political purposes. i think he sees a political victory at the bottom of the cliff. gets additional tax revenue for new programs, gets to cut the military and blame republicans for it. >> attention now turns to the senate which will reconvene on thursday. the 27th. house majority leader harry reid now has the task of trying to cobble something together that could perhaps pass the sena

two weeks until the new year and the president is about to leave for hawaii, and congress is going to be gone for christmas, too, and you know there is no more effective motivator for capitol hill than pressure, and they have it right now. what the president has done today is he has laid out a scaled down version of a fiscal cliff deal, you know, keeping tax cuts in place for 98% of americans, extending unemployment insurance, and laying out a plan, a down payment on a promise to do entitlement reform and also made a pitch to the american people to only blame republicans if there is no deal. so it is a two-pronged attack that he makes right before taking off on vacation. so right now, you know, the plan is basically to keep the pressure on, and we know both sides are planning to come back at some point after christmas and try to get something worked out, but no overt optimism coming really from the aides on either side right now. we'll see, soledad. i will tell you folks right now are planning to make new year's eve plans here in washington, d.c. we're not so sure we're getting out

hawaii in the senate for five decades and second longest serving in history. he was a medal of honor recipient and hospitalized last week but eventually succumbed to respiratory complications. we're told his last word was aloha. inouye was 88 years old. >>> fiscal cliff talks may be gaining momentum. president obama met with john boehner after boehner indicated he was willing to make new concessions. it was a face-to-face meeting, their third in eight days. it is important and a good thing. it lasted 45 minutes. it has been 501 days since the united states lost its top credit rating. >>> elsewhere in politics a big decision in south carolina. governor nikki haley appointed tim scott to replace out going senator jim demitt. he will not only black member and will only fill the seat until a special election is held in november 2014. those results will determine who fills the remaining two years of the term. you may recall earlier this month he said he was resigning by january 1st to lead a conservative think tank where he said he could make a bigger difference than he does in the senate

for the holidays, the president has gone to hawaii on vacation. white house correspondent brianna keilar tells us no one is really talking, anyone, to get this solved. at least not here at christmas. >> reporter: senate democrats are not in conversations right now with senate republicans or with house republicans. and this is problematic obviously because in order to avoid the fiscal cliff, you would need to find some sort of deal that would make it through the senate and the house and that would mean democratic and republican support. right now, all eyes on the senate because they will reconvene on the 27th that is thursday. and senate majority leader harry reid, it is up to him really to cobble together something that can get some of that support. right now the white house is still supporting a threshold of $250,000 back to their initial starting point for tax rates going up for those making more than that. but you can imagine, hala, that will be very hard for some republicans, maybe even some democrats to sign on to. >> right, and, you know, for just about a week ago, it was common to hear, oh

died. senator daniel inouye represented hawaii from the day it became a state in 1959. he was 88. suffered from respiratory problems. shaken majority leader harry reid addressed colleagues yesterday. >> i have never known anyone like dan inouyue, no one else has. the kindness he has shown me for my time here in the senate has been something i will cherish always. >> senator inouye, second longest serving member ever behind robert byrd of west virginia. >>> newtown high school football coach steven george never expected a response when he left a message on a white board for president obama the president visited newtown on sunday. coach george and another teacher left a note on the white board in advance, thanking him for coming. they weren't sure the commander in chief would see it, but he did. the coach's note read, dear president obama the newtown community is so thankful that are every are you coming to help us heal. in times of adversity, it is reassuring to know that we have a strong leader to help us recover. the president wrote a note back on this white board. it said simpl

at the age of 88. he served hawaii as a senator for half a century. and as a congressman for three years before that. earlier this morning, republican house speaker john boehner made some remarks in honor of him. by the way, only 31 people have lain in the capitol rotunda, the last was gerald r. ford nearly six years ago. and the last senator so honored was hubert humphrey of minnesota. inouye was a war hero and served his country for a long time. and you see his casket being placed on the stand there in the u.s. capitol. >>> this morning, more grief and new details in newtown, connecticut, friends of the killer's mother says she spent her final days at a luxury resort in new hampshire. just hours later her son killed her and launched the deadly rampage at the school there. in the wake of the tragedy in newtown, parents are thinking differently about how to protect their children. it may seem like an extreme measure, but some parents are even trying to bulletproof their children. here's cnn's miguel marquez in salt lake city. >> reporter: it is a disturbing sign of the times. >> you guys

that he was telling people in a he had inherited a bunch of money and planning to move to hawaii. apparently that's not grounded in any truth whatsoever. but you talk to all the people who knew him and they say this just doesn't sound like jacob roberts. and so at this point, it's just a real mystery. we're also getting more details in terms of the chronology in terms of how it occurred. we're told roberts entered the second floor of the macy's store, started firing actually in the food court area. and then within a minute, within one minute, police swarmed to the scene and when roberts felt like he was cornered, he went to the first floor, that and he where he shot himself. meantime, we're also hearing from someis of his friends. listen to someone who knew roberts from high school. >> he was a counseling aid with us. kids would sometimes be assigned to be our assistant and he helped us with some of the work in the counseling office. i found him to be a very polite young man, soft spoken, nice smile. and just really surprised that somebody with his personality would end up doing
